Targeted Grade Level: Grades K-124-H Egg & Chick Project

Enrollment deadlines for all teachers are September 10, 2007 and March 10, 2008. After these dates you will be able to get into the session only if someone cancels.

Required First time Teacher Workshop: This workshop will take you step by step through the incubation process as you teach the embryology program in your classroom. When you complete the workshop you will then be certified, and Public school teachers can receive 18 component points or one trade day for this class. Each workshop will be limited to the first 25 teachers enrolling. Each teacher will have the use of an incubator to be returned at the end of the program, will receive 12 fertilized eggs, and starter feed. Dates of workshops are October 1 through November 5, 2007 and April 7 through May 12, 2008.

These workshops will be held at the Pinellas County Extension Office on 6 consecutive Monday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students will learn the stages of embryonic development by observing the incubation of fertilized chicken eggs in the classroom, and will be responsible for observing and recording developmental information about the embryo during the 21-day incubation period. The 4-H Office will provide a list of some possible homes for the chicks. Chicks may not be given to SPCA or students per School Administration Policy.

Workshop Dates: Previously certified teachers must attend a refresher workshop from 5:00—6:00p.m. on October 8, 2007 or April 11, 2008 at the Pinellas Extension Office, 12520 Ulmerton Rd., Largo, FL. At the workshops teachers will review incubation, receive 12 fertilized eggs, and starter feed. Certified teachers must provide their own incubator.
