Life in Our Back Yard
The Diversity of Living Things
Suitable for Grades: 2-12
Required Curriculum: Plant Connections Lesson 2
Program Available: Weekdays
This tour through the gardens will introduce students to the great diversity of plants from around the world and the myriad of wildlife that depend on them. During the tour we will discover plants of all shapes and sizes, different flower types, leaf types, textures, fragrances, and some surprising secrets for survival. After the tour, the students will participate in a discovery activity; the diversity of life in one square foot of the back yard. Measurements, drawings, and opinions are elicited through a worksheet provided to each student.
Waste-Free Lunch Challenge
(time needed: 30 minutes)
Following any of the garden tours, students are invited to stay for a "waste-free lunch challenge" where the students bring a packed-lunch and we eat together then examine what in the lunchbox can be re-used, re-cycled, or composted. The goal is to leave no trash!
