It’s Our Nature
Florida’s Fabulous Native Plants
Suitable for Grades: K-12
Program Available: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
This guided program focuses on the diversity and importance of Florida’s native plants. The class will explore the Aquatic Habitat Demonstration Area at the Garden; an accessible area demonstrating aquatic, marginal and upland plants. The focus of this tour will be on native plant conservation, the importance of native plants to the original people in Florida, and how planting native plants in our own gardens can improve our community. Other topics addressed include the watershed and how plants can reduce pollution.
Optional activities following It’s Our Nature:
The Web of Life – Students form a web of life, each representing a different organism while holding a section of a continuous piece of string. Various environmental change scenarios are suggested and the effects to the whole web are discussed.
Leaf it to Me – A leaf-rubbing activity wherein students learn the anatomy of leaves and how plants use these temporary structures to collect sunlight, and transport nutrients.
