Florida-Friendly Landscaping for Community Associations
Pinellas County offers a service specifically for homeowner and condominium associations that is sponsored by Pinellas-Anclote River Basin Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the UF/IFAS Pinellas County Extension Office.
This program, coordinated by Doris Heitzmann, offers free on-site landscape evaluations, an evaluation report including recommendations and a presentation of recommendations at board meetings.
Landscape elements that will be evaluated include:
- Overall design, selection and placement of plants
- Problem plants, such as diseased trees and invasive plants
- Irrigation system design and operation
- Nutritional deficiencies and the application of fertilizers
- Pest and disease issues and pesticide use on the property
- Pruning practices
The Community Association Outreach program is based on the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods (FYN) program. Landscape evaluations and recommendations are based on scientific research of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Service. Following these recommended practices and Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Principles will result in a landscape that is healthy while having a minimal impact on the environment.
