The Pinellas County Master Gardener Program began in 1982 and to date has provided training to hundreds of volunteers enabling them to become Certified Master Gardeners.
The Master Gardeners of Pinellas County have played an important role in the development of the teaching landscape that surrounds the Pinellas County Extension facility. Under the leadership of staff horticulturist, the Master Gardeners propagate plants, weed, prune, mulch and tenderly care for the demonstration areas that make up The Florida Botanical Gardens.
Additionally, many Master Gardeners volunteer their time to projects such as school gardening education, assisting with 4-H programming, presenting educational programs, and leading tours of The Florida Botanical Gardens for adults and children. Master Gardeners also assist the horticulture staff with providing research-based information to the public as well as computer based assistance to all Extension Departments in a variety of areas.
Prior training, education, and gardening knowledge are not needed for selection to the Master Gardener training program. A sincere desire to learn and help others and a personal commitment to volunteer service are the main traits needed.
Master Gardeners donate more than just their time, they also donate their expertise in ways that increase the quality of life all of us in Pinellas County!
